There’s Freedom in the Pockets : How to Make Money Living Abroad

So, you’re ready to live the expat lifestyle. Great! There’s just one small problem: How will you make money living abroad?

In this post, I’ll tell you how I make money living abroad and I’ve included a few tips for how you can do it too!

Sometimes work is a walk in the park!

I Searched My Pockets

In the pockets of my life is where I’ve found the most freedom. The keys to financial independence, time freedom and location flexibility were carved out of the time I created around my responsibilities. I chipped away bit by bit until I created the life I wanted: living as a digital nomad with my husband and three kiddos in the ocean-front city of Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico.

In May of 2014, I started my own online business partnership with a worldwide health and wellness multi-level marketing company. That business grew to include online health coaching and physical fitness training. Using evening, weekend, early morning and lunch hours to grow, I maintained my full-time career as an Assistant Principal. With this supplemental income increasing gradually, I reached an important, life-altering milestone. In February 2015, I was able to resign from my full-time career and begin a new chapter as a full-time Slay at Home Mom.

Working from home with increased time flexibility, I discovered yet another passion: writing. I began blogging and eventually wrote a book. I have since expanded my career to include freelance writing services. As such, I now have income from multiple streams: residual income from my MLM partnership, passive income resulting from online book sales, and active income from health coaching and freelance writing jobs I choose based on my schedule and client needs.

*Update: I am now a life management expert helping women, entrepreneurs, career businesswomen, and mothers reduce the overwhelm, increase productivity and live the life they deserve through my signature program, The Start Smart Method. I also help families move abroad through business courses, ebooks, and more.

I can do all of this from anywhere in the world. The multiple streams of revenue allow me to make money living abroad. Each ‘job’ stems from a passion-area. For the most part, it feels less like work and more like profitable play. Most importantly, I was able to start all of this right at home, in the pockets of my life, around my family and my 9-to-5 career.

You too can start your transition to make money living abroad by working from your own living room or kitchen table, around your current schedule! How? Here are four suggestions:

Make Money Living Abroad Tip #1: Multi-Level Marketing

As I mentioned before, I partnered with an MLM company I was proud of, that distributed a product and customer experience I believed in. There are hundreds of companies (also referred to as network marketing or direct sales) to choose from. Find a product that you love and enjoy talking about and you too can begin making money around your full-time job. An MLM may give you the financial boost you need to begin creating a team (and income) that you can manage from anywhere in the world.

Make Money Living Abroad Tip #2: Online and Remote Work

Odd and end, part-time, online job opportunities can open doors to higher paying, permanent remote positions.  Companies are often looking for part and full-time customer service agents, transcriptionists, and even tutors. Freelance job sites list part or full-time income opportunities. Many of the jobs can be completed from anywhere, especially if you’re in the technology, education or writing fields.

Make Money Living Abroad Tip #3: Education

Partnering with an international or local school looking for American teachers can be an ideal way to transition to life abroad. Many schools require a teaching certificate and certain training or degrees. Others will train on-site. Many positions have great benefits such as: pay in US dollars, discounted housing, travel vouchers, health insurance and tuition discounts. For many of my friends, teaching abroad has been a great way to explore the world with kiddos in tow. These jobs have provided peace of mind via steady income, benefits, and a built-in sense of community.

Make Money Living Abroad Tip #4: Create Your Own Digital Product or Service

Do you love to create websites? Are you a great people person? Perhaps you already have a degree in business or accounting? You can create your very own digital product or service. From coaching to writing, web development, tax assistance and resume services, most anything you can do in an office setting you can do online from anywhere in the world. Build your own purpose-driven business and turn your passion into a paycheck!

Co-Worker for the day!

It Can be Done!

Balancing a full-time job, motherhood, responsibilities and working towards your dreams may seem daunting, but it is so worth it! By mapping my plan I created opportunities that allowed me to earn supplemental income. This is how I now make money living abroad. I started all of this around a 9-to-5 and three small children. I am here to tell you, that you can do it too!

Conceive it, Believe it (work tenaciously for it) and you will Achieve it!

  1. Excellent Intel. I am working on obtaining remote work and self employment while living abroad with my baby girl.

    1. Glad it was helpful! There’s a plethora of sites out there to help you get started in a remote job and with commuting off the table, you’ll have more time to devote to building your own business or creating a product if you so choose. Best of Luck!

  2. I really loved this post. I’m 23 years old and graduated university and am moving to Spain. I have a dream of creating my own online business. I have been living abroad for about 7 years and have been told I am really good with people. Do you have any advice on what I could do?

    1. Thanks for reading and commenting! If you have a special skill, you can consider consulting or coaching. You can host online webinars teaching a skill. You might also consider teaching a language online through private tutoring. All of these are good ‘people person’ activities you can do remotely and get paid for. Enjoy Spain, I’ve never been, but I hear it’s amazing!

  3. This is very practical, specific, and generous advice. Thank you for your openess and willingness to share!
