Thirty-Two Candles…Might Burn Down the House!

I purchased four mini-bottles of Beringer Pink Moscato at the self-checkout of my local grocery store last week. As soon as I scanned them, the “Age Verification Required” notice popped up on my screen, preventing me from continuing the transaction without assistance. My husband laughed at me as I rummaged through my purse for my wallet and ID.

The friendly cashier came over and patiently waited as my husband made some joke about it being my twenty-first birthday that weekend. She raised her eyebrows in mock surprise. Upon finding my card and handing it over, she looked at it closely, smiled and nodded. After keying in the necessary information, she made a comment alluding to the fact that indeed my thirty-second birthday was right around the corner and by the way, congratulations!

I laughed, a bit sarcastically, then paused and told her that actually, I was excited. That my thirties hadn’t been that bad, honestly. Another waiting customer chimed in and said that thus far, her thirties have been far better than her twenties were. And with that, a conversation ensued and a club was formed. A club of three women in their thirties who would have never believed that being thirty (and beyond) could possibly be better than being that beautiful, youthful, 20-something model we all see on the covers of fashion magazines and on advertisements for the hottest clubs.

As I approach my thirty-second birthday this weekend, I thought I would share five realizations about being a woman in my thirties that have been serious life game-changers.

  1. Less is more. Life is not so much about the things we acquire, but rather about the people we inspire and the places we leave better than they were when we arrived.
  2. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness and good friends should be treated like precious jewels.
  3. Anything beyond ten o’clock at night is late. Too late. Period. End of story.
  4. Do more of what makes you happy. Carve out intentional time to do enjoyable activities.
  5. Staying fit, hip, and current, all take a bit more effort than they did when I was younger.

So, with that, cheers to getting wiser, better, funnier, happier, and freer! I am excited to see what this thirty-second year of life has in store for me and what new contributions I will be blessed with the ability to make in the lives of my family and friends.
