Is location independence right for me?

Many of my readers and followers have a dream to live in a land far-far away, sipping on fine wines paired with delicate cheeses or lounging in a hammock over-looking the ocean. Others, however, are not quite ready to part with the numerous benefits of living on American soil.

One thing that holds them all together though is the desire for something bigger…something, more!

More time freedom, increased income stability, expanded opportunities are all things that many of my beloved friends seek.

Location independence can be the answer to this need.

Whether working remotely from a Parisian café, or from your pj’s in your single-family home in New Jersey, having a location independent lifestyle can be freeing and empowering.

What is location independence?

Location independence is the practice of having a stable income source that is not dependent of being in any one consistent physical location. It is a job (or entrepreneurial venture) that can be performed from anywhere in the world. Have WiFi? Will travel! One can choose to work for a company in a remote job or as a digital entrepreneur.

Location independent careers look different to various people. The bottom line is that none of these income sources require you to physically check-in to a set location day after day after day, uniformly clad in suit and tie. This idea is freeing for many people.

There are numerous ways to begin a location independent lifestyle!

I began mine with a network marketing company in the pockets of my day while also holding my 9-5 career. This is a great way to make supplemental income. That income can be used as savings, extra spending money, and can even grow into a full-time income job replacement.

Others begin by taking on freelance jobs in fields such as graphic design, editing, computer programming and more. Still others choose to work remotely for a company in areas such as customer service, program development, or transcription.

Teaching online for a web-based educational program can also be a great means of location independent income. Many of my fellow digital nomads even venture out to create their own entrepreneurial careers as online coaches, web developers, and even business coaches. The possibilities are endless and the trend appears that these opportunities are only expanding!

Are you ready to be location independent?

Becoming location independent isn’t difficult, but it does require a bit of grit. One of the most difficult things many location independent entrepreneurs struggle with is discipline. It requires a great deal of commitment to get out of bed every morning and ‘open your store for business’. A physical job that requires you to arrive on time and clock in. Conversely, many location independent careers rely on the fortitude of the individual to steel themselves against the draw of an extra few minutes in the bed.

One great way to counter this is to plan out your day with a Daily Method of Operation (DMO). Another key way to ensure you’re getting the most out of your day is to get out of bed and get ready as if you were going into ‘the office’. Working in pj’s is so alluring. For some, however, the simple act of washing up, getting dressed and working in a dedicated space (whether within the home or at a local café or shared workspace) is essential to productivity.

I truly believe that location independence is an important option for everyone to consider. The peace of mind that comes along with the ability to work from anywhere, even if you don’t go anywhere far or frequent, is transformational. The flexibility of remote income has far-reaching effects that are beneficial to the individual and to those around them.
